Note
Mallory, in short, is a one act opera that follows a young couple and their close friend as they navigate an unexpected cancer diagnosis. This work is unique amongst other similar works in that it follows more closely what it means to be the loved one of someone with cancer rather than the person facing the illness themselves. Ultimately, Mallory explores the way trauma and illness shapes relationships and how flawed we as people can become when placed under immense pressure. This story is an incredibly personal one as well. In 2016, my partner at the time was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that targets the body’s lymphatic system. Her time in the hospital and the subsequent six months of treatment have become a deeply defining chapter in both of our lives. In many ways, Mallory is my way of processing this catastrophic event and hopefully will allow others with a similar experience to do the same.
